Convenience
Access control systems allow you several conveniences. Smart access control systems, in particular, can allow you to remotely control access to your home or business so long as you have internet access. This is especially convenient when you need to let someone in while you are at work or on holiday. Access control systems also make it easier to grant and rescind long-term access. Even with basic systems such as keypads, it's a lot easier to take away a person's access than it would be if you had to change the locks. These are just a few ways that access control systems make your security more convenient. Countless other things are made significantly easier by access control systems.

Increased security
Increasing security by increasing the number of ways to get in may seem counter-intuitive, but I assure you it's not. The key is in the fact that, with access control systems, you are the one in control. Take a door with a keypad, for example; if the only way to access your building was through the keypad, anyone that you want to allow access must be given the pin. This can be applied to many other examples as well, such as keycards or keys. Anybody that has full access but doesn't need it is a security risk. Having an alternative means of allowing access (beyond manually letting people in) means that you can limit the security access afforded to people who don't need full access.
Entry records
Some access control systems will store data on people entering and exiting your building. There are many benefits to this. If something happens, such as theft or property damage, you can use this data to determine who was in the building when it happened. This can significantly narrow down the list of people who could be responsible. The data can also be checked regularly to see if anyone is entering the building at unexpected times. Checking for irregularities can help to identify any suspicious activity before it becomes a problem.
